AVC 88 – MiraCosta 68  Great start against unranked MiraCosta but can AVC step up against ranked teams?

OCEANSIDE – Following two disappointing losses at the hands of No. 3 ranked East LA and Victor Valley at the Cuyamaca Tournament only a week ago, the Marauder men’s basketball team got back to its winning ways to open the 2nd Annual Clete Adelman Classic hosted by MiraCosta College as it easily defeated the host Spartans, 88-68, in the opening round Tuesday evening.

All five starters for the Marauders scored in double figures, led by D’Mauria Jones who finished with a game-high 20 points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. Jones also added five assists. Osi Nwachukwu contributed with 17 points and eight rebounds and Julian Payton added 16 points, including four 3-pointers, and nine assists.
AVC, which shot an efficient 52 percent from the field, outscored MiraCosta 46-31 in the second half after only leading by five points at halftime.

Things don’t get much easier for AVC as it faces Cerritos in the semifinals on Wednesday at 6pm. The Falcons are ranked No. 13 in the state. Should the Marauders get past Cerritos, they would face either No. 16 San Diego Miramar or No. 2 San Diego City.
