Concussion Baseline Assessment for AVC Basketball Team

Posted: July 19, 2017 in AVC Men's Basketball

Due to the size, the speed and power of today’s college basketball players, the NCAA highly recommends best practices monitoring for concussions.  The NCAA Sport Science Institute and leading scientific and sports medicine organizations have developed best practices for athletics departments and sports medicine staff to use as they implement concussion diagnosis and management practices on their campuses.

One of the parts of the concussion best practices recommendations is to have each player on the team to have a baseline assessment.  A one-time, pre-participation baseline concussion assessment for all varsity student-athletes should include, but not necessarily be limited to:

1.  A brain injury/concussion history
2. Symptom evaluation.
3. Cognitive assessment.
4. Balance evaluation.
5. The team physician should determine pre-participation clearance and/or the need for additional consultation or testing.

It was concussion baseline week for the basketball players at Antelope Valley College.
