Preparing for a Big Game…No Stone Unturned

When you are one win away from the California State Tournament and you are playing on the road against the only team that  beat you twice this year that happens to be  from your conference, what can you do to prepare for the third game?  You know everything good and bad about your opponent and the same about your team…don’t you…or may be not!

The first thing you do is to go to watch in person your opponent in their playoff game AGAIN!

You get every video that was ever made this year from your opponent that you you can get your hands on and watch them for hours and hours and hours….

You meet with your assistant coaches to squeeze every bit of knowledge and insight that they have on what can done to win this third game against the opponent.

You give your players an extra day off to help them heal their tweaks and clear their minds so they will be completely ready and focused for practice for the big game.

When your practice restarts you see a very confident and loose group of players and you tell them what a great job they did in the second round of the playoffs.

John TaylorThey you remind a player in practice that if he really wants to go up north to the state playoffs he has to make a much better screen every time because this is a “one and done” playoff.  Deep silence prevails.  The reminder was to every player on the floor. Intensity on every play on both ends of the court.

That is what you get from college basketball coach John Taylor approaching 550 wins in his career…No stone unturned!
