AVC holds off VVC

LANCASTER – That wasn’t a basketball boxscore.

It was a CHP accident report.

The Marauder men, barely, walked away from the wreckage.

Antelope Valley College, winners of 17 games, couldn’t exhale until Bryan Katz’s potential game-winning three-point bid from the corner bounded awry at the buzzer, finalizing a 71-69 escape of Victor Valley on Newton Chelette Court at Marauder Gym.

The Marauders (18-9, 5-3 Western State Conference) led 71-61 with 3:21 to play. They did not score again.

The Rams (4-17, 0-8) forced four AVC turnovers, including two in the last 50 seconds.

Katz converted one turnover into a three-pointer from the wing, and drove another through an astonishingly porous AVC defense for a layup.

Garrett White’s midcourt pickpocketing of AVC led to the fateful three at the buzzer.

The Marauders never actually trailed after Cory Dollarhide, who officially earned his degree earlier last week, nailed a longball for a 9-6 lead with 16:12 to play in the first half.

But even after putting three straight field goals together for the first time all night early in the second half, the Marauders could never put away the Rams.

A major reason was turnovers. AVC committed 19, leading to 19 Victor Valley points.

On five different occasions the Marauders forced turnovers, only to turn the ball right back over in transition.

Ace Warren led AVC with 16 points and seven rebounds. Jailen Gill scored 14 points, and Darik Pradia, who connected three times in six tries from the arc, finished with 11.

The Marauders notched 18 assists on their 29 field goals, led by nine helpers from point guard Scooter Hall.

White led VVC with 24 points, and Katz finished with 20. The two guards combined to go 8-for-5 from downtown.

The Marauder men close out Western State Conference play at Citrus on Wednesday, before the pre-playoff finale in Marauder Gym next Saturday night vs. Glendale.
