Coaches vs. Cancer challenge

In its annual Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser, Antelope Valley College raised more than $15,000 for the American Cancer Society. For the fifth straight year, AVC is the most generous community college program in the nation to Cancer research.

Ed Knudsen, AVC’s Superintendent/President, practiced so much for his role alongside AVC Dean of Athletics Newton Chelette that he suffered spinal inflammation that put him on his back all day Saturday.

Wade Sandra, a college official, was pressed into duty in Knudsen’s absence. Sandra sank 23 free throws in one minute.

“We didn’t know whether Wade ever played basketball, and he goes out there and puts the pressure on me,” laughed Chelette, who matched his 2016 total of 28 free throws made. “What Wade did showed how special this community is, the way it gets behind these great causes.”

Responding to $1,000 challenges from Valley business executive John Calandri and Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris, Chelette donned a blindfold and sank five more free throws.
