LANCASTER – The Paraclete football team capped off a historic season with another piece of history on Saturday night at Antelope Valley College.

The Spirits defeated Menlo-Atherton, 39-21, to win the CIF Division 3-AA State championship, becoming the first team from the Antelope Valley to accomplish the feat.

"I was already overwhelmed with the CIF (title), but state – we’re just honored and privileged to carry this out for the whole Antelope Valley," Paraclete senior KJ Latu said. "To do something like that, it’s amazing."

Throughout the season, Paraclete coach Dean Herrington promised his players that if they listened to him, they would all be wearing rings. Now, they are CIF-Southern Section Division 6 champs, State Division 3AA South and State champs.

"This is more than I could ever ask for," Paraclete senior wide receiver Branden Smith said. "We have the best coach ever anywhere. I think we did a hell of a job and we deserved that title."
