Player Initiative, Transfers and D-1 Rumors

Basketball Player’s Initiative

With only two weeks left of the summer vacation, its getting real close to the start of a long, hard, and productive season.  How productive this year is  going to be will based on great part on the players;  Paraphrasing a well known quote, “There are three kinds of basketball players in the world, “Those who make things happen, those who watch things happen, those who wonder what happened.”  With only two players returning for AVC with playing time last year, the coaching staff believe they recruited  a number of “make things happen” kinds of guys.

Thoughts on Three Elite D-1 University Basketball Programs

  1. Duke U;  Talent, Talent, Talent.  If they can stay healthy they should be rated #1 at the beginning of the season.  Some crying that Duke’s pre conference season is week.
  2. UNLV;  With the coaching mess over at UNLV,  everyone left the program except four scholarship players.  Tough year coming up.
  3. North Carolina U;  Looks like their lawyers found a way to get around the NCAA investigation on basketball players getting A’s in classes that were not really classes.  Here is the way I read it.  “Everyone could take the fake classes not just athletes so it’s an accreditation body issue not NCAA.  If that works, wow!

D-1 Transfers

Some Mid-major team coaches blame the increasing numbers of players transferring between programs  on;

  • Coaches not getting to know players well enough before they recruit them.
  • Players not getting to know the program well enough before they accept the scholarship
  • Universities promising player thing they can’t and would never provide.  “Once knew a D-1 head coach guaranteed 30 shots a game for one of his recruits.”

All of the above makes seem right on to me.  Do something about it.
