The Spring 2016 JUCO showcase at Santa Monica this year is history.  There were  good things about this year’s showcase and some weakness as well.  It’s the nature of the beast.

The goal of these showcases are to provide to university coaches a place where they can take one more look at JUCO sophomores who have not yet committed to a specific university on a scholarship.  I noticed that not only were there sophomores at the showcase but eligible freshmen as well.  The freshmen are hoping to get a scholarship for their last three years of eligibility.  Many players at the showcase profess they have scholarship offers but by attending they are hoping to get a few more to chose from and possibly get a offer that is more advantageous to them.

Lets take a look at the good and not so good.  Good stuff is in in black and not so good in red.

  1. Great turn out of players.
  2. I thought there would be more university coaches.
  3. Free parking!  Hurray!
  4. Lots of seating and all day fee for fans $10.00.
  5. Difficult to see the far court action at he Santa Monica Gym.
  6. No food stand at the tournament.
  7. All offense and no defense.  “Bigs” seldom get the ball.  Guards jacked up threes without much passing.
  8. Very well organized and on time.
  9. Good officiating.

All in all I got my basketball fix and got to talk to a lot of players and fans.  Asked a knowledgeable fan how many players who played at this  showcase would get a new offer or  improved offer?.  After a long thought process on the question he answered;  10%.  The showcase was certainly well worth it to those players.
