Winning…A Team Affair

Posted: January 25, 2016 in AVC Men's Basketball, AVC Men's BB 2015-16, conference

AVC started the season off with a bang.  Last undefeated team left in JUCO Cali and finished the pre-conference with a 15-1 record and  12/24/2015 ranked #1 in state coaches poll.  High energy, intense defense, and great team play.  Ranked #3 in state RPI… A scary good team.

Then came January 2016.  AVC has a 3-3 record in conference will probably drop out of the top 15 in the state coaches poll, and is stumbling along.

Looking at the stats in January, it is clear that two areas of the Marauder game has come apart;  Rebounding and defense.  AVC is giving up 10-15 points a game in offensive put backs and no team can consistently win handing their opponent 15 points per game the easy way.  Add to that, in the first 16 games, AVC’s three point defense was solid!  No easy outside shots.  Now?  A step slow on getting out on the shooter and in several of their losses, their opponents shot over 50% from beyond the arc with wide open shots all game long.

Enough said about the obvious.  Its time for the team to get serious in team rebounding and team defense. Same group of players that went 15-1 so we know it can be done.   Key word here is TEAM.  This is not a group of players with “super stars.”   If AVC is going to win, it will have to be done as with intensity and team play,  not as individuals.

I like the guards, the depth and the talent there. It is our strongest weapon, clearly. But the small lineup that they so love to use does not leave them in position for either rebounds or post defense. They are solid 3-pt. shooters but don’t follow their shots, and 4 guards getting back on defense doesn’t leave many bodies for offensive rebounds or putbacks.
They’ve shown they can play great defense, but usually it only comes at critical times in the 2nd half after they’ve fallen well behind.
I don’t know how they can be a top tier team if they cannot address the factors that have them in this funk they’re in.
