The prestigious Drew League draws the best of the best college and professional players for 14 weeks every summer in Los Angeles.  Participants in the League say that it is an experience that they  will never forget and it teaches them what level of competition they will face in the their future basketball careers.  This year, four  Antelope College players are playing in the Drew league;

Mike Scott, 6’2”, 185, PG, joining University of Idaho this year.

Daviyon Draper, 6’7”, 215, Wing, Sophomore, Antelope Valley College

I am sitting at a desk writing this piece in a little house on the banks of the Hassayampa River just outside of Wickenburg, Arizona.  We headed out after the JUCO state tournament and did a little gambling in Nevada and now are getting ready to watch the Dodgers in Glendale, Arizona.  Oh forgot, I received a call from my brother in Minnesota who was sitting looking outside at the blizzard(Alberta Clipper) that was blowing 2 1/2 feet of snow.  He wasn’t too happy when I let him know about the 90 degree weather here.

The warm weather, the quiet gurgling of the river, the change of environment has given me time to think about last season and the next one coming up.  Here goes;

Past season had 20 wins, three wins over state runner up Chaffey.  Led the majority of the playoff game against State Champ Mt. Sac.  Beat final four Merritt in the summer.  Put on an outstanding summer tournament.  Lost twice to San Bernardino Valley by 4 points and lost to Desert on the road on a 40 footer by their Center.  Not bad but as every team in the State would say, “Things must improve next year.”

There will be some some very exciting things going in the next couple of months.  AVC has 6 graduating sophomores;

  1. Mike Scott
  2. Terrance Berry
  3. Larry Slaughter
  4. Vadal Faniel
  5. John Washington
  6. Dwan Caldwell

These players will be visiting Universities to determine which scholarship they will accept.  Four of the six players have multiple offers and two have interest at the next level.  Interest will turn to offers when high school players and other JUCO players don’t make their grades.  It will fun reporting on this recruiting.  AVC sends their players to the next level! Great stuff.

So how about next year?

Recruiting, getting the Summer Tournament organized, planning for the move to the Western State South Conference, reporting on the returning sophomores, the transfers, and the new high school recruits.   Stay tuned to this website keep up with AVC’s activities and even other teams.

Chaffey 87

San Francisco City  85

SoCal 3 and Dunk wipe out the North.

Its been a busy summer for AVC’s power forward sophomore, Dwan “Po” Caldwell, 6’8”, 245.  HeDwan Po Caldwell tournament 4 played the 8 summer showcase games and really impressed the D-1 schools with his prowess around the basket.  He was smiling about all of the attention he was getting.

A healthy Caldwell will be a force this year for AVC both on the boards and and scoreboard.  Po was also invited to the All-American Showcase in Las Vegas and showed his skills in the paint and around the basket.  Its going to be a great year for Dwan.

LarryDOf all of AVC players this spring, Larry Slaughter, 6’8”, 225 showed the greatest level of improvement and energy of all of their returning players.  Larry played at two positions during the summer showcase season;  the wing and the forward.  At the wing he drilled three point shots, drove the lane, and was a strong rebounder.  At the forward position, he was a defensive presence, shot mid-range jumpers and dominated the boards.

Larry was invited to the All-American Showcase in Las Vegas and was named to the All-Star team for the showcase.

With Larry Slaughter playing at this high level,  AVC’s four “bigs” will be a tough group for other teams to handle.

I believe that July of every year is the most important month for a for JUCO Basketball program.  Rather than replay my thoughts on why this is true, you can read my blog post http://melgru23.wordpress.com/2012/07/06/july-the-most-important-month-in-basketball/

Instead, now that July is over, lets look at what occurred in July 2012 for Antelope Valley College.

  1. This website provided 97 articles written in the 31 days.
  2. The site experienced 8638 “hits” for the month or averaged 279 articles reads per day.  Readers originated from all over the United States and 26 foreign countries.  Crazy isn’t it that a JUCO Basketball fan website can garner so much interest from players, coaches and fans.
  3. Antelope Valley College added three key freshman players;
    1. Joseph Prince, 6’0”, 180, qualifier, guard, Player of the Year in the Golden League  http://melgru23.wordpress.com/team-2011-12-2/1-team-2012-13/joseph-princefreshman/

A busy and productive month that may lead to an outstanding year for Antelope Valley College.

When you look back at a year or in this case the showcase summer season, basketball fans have a play in a game that they will remember and talk about for years.  In the eight games the AVC team played this year, the sudden death overtime against Merritt College stands out in my mind.

washint2Looking back on the 25 seconds of overtime that involved 4 AVC sophomores, you can see why coaches love sophomores.  Coach Taylor put 6’6” John Washington into the game.  Washington is a tremendous leaper and rebounder.  In addition the OT crew included sophomores, Mike Scott, T Berry, and Larry Slaughter and I’ll be darned if I can remember the 5th player who didn’t touch the ball.  Here goes.

As hoped, Washington out jumped the taller Merritt College post man and tipped the ball to point Scott.  Mike got up a shot and missed.  But, Washington came through with an offensive rebound and a sharp pass to Larry Slaughter.  Slaughter measured a three ball and saw wide open T Berry.  The crisp chest pass to T who coolly drilled a 3 point shot for the win.  Love them sophomores!  Best moment of the summer showcase 2012.

larry3A showcase like the All-American JUCO 80 promotes individual play to the extreme where as, the AVC D-1 style system promotes passing and sharing to the extreme.

The first day for AVC showed AVC’s players doing a lot of sharing and passing and not much individual play.   Not many specifics but sounds as if Larry Slaughter continues his great summer.  Po Caldwell and Vadal Faniel had a average day and Mike Scott had a day that he is willing to forget.

Here is today’s schedule.

Vegas games day 2

  1. Team 2 – Mike Scott
  2. Team 3 – Larry Slaughter
  3. Team 8 – Vadal Faniel
  4. Team 12 – Po Caldwell

From the early games today, sounds as if the AVC players are starting to do their “individual” stuff well.  When these players get back to practice the coaches will have to get them back to sharing and passing again.  LOL!
